In June, Senator Grassley revealed that drug companies, including those that make drugs he advocates for childhood bipolar disorder, had paid Biederman .6 million in consulting and speaking fees between 2000 and 2007. Two of his colleagues received similar amounts. After the revelation, the president of the Massachusetts General Hospital and the chairman of its physician organization sent a letter to the hospital's physicians expressing not shock over the enormity of the conflicts of interest, but sympathy for the beneficiaries: "We know this is an incredibly painful time for these doctors and their families, and our hearts go out to them."

A South Korean Buddhist organization delivered a batch of food assistance for mothers and children in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), the Yonhap News Agency reported on Tuesday. According to Yonhap, the Seoul-based Jungto Society (JTS) said its baby formula and maternal nutrition worth 380 million won (302,300 U.S. dollars) will be distributed in Hoeryong, a town in DPRK's northernmost North Hamgyong Province.

Adiza ran scared and crying into the street. Ten years old and 4-foot-9, she fled the house where she had worked for more than a year, cleaning and sweeping from before dawn until late at night.... "I couldn't take any more," recalled Adiza, a slight girl with close-cropped hair and almond-shaped eyes, who talked in a halting whisper as she described how her employer beat her with her hands and with cooking pots before the November day she ran away. The number of girls like Adiza, who leave their communities or even their countries to clean other people's houses, has surged in recent years, according to labor and human rights specialists. The girls in the maid trade, some as young as 5, often go unpaid, and their work in private homes means the abuses they suffer are out of public view.

This week, we learnt that one in five English farmers has received a letter from the Rural Payments Agency, demanding a total of £37 million that it overpaid in 2005 and 2006. The agency now admits that it miscalculated 10,000 payments totalling £20 million in 2005 and a further 7,000 valued at £17 million in 2006. The overpayments in the current round range from £300 to £15,000. Many of the farmers involved did not know they had been overpaid and the agency – quite unjustly – refuses to tell them why its former calculations were wrong. Remember, this is the agency that failed to pay English farmers on time in 2005 and 2006, for which Britain was fined £74.5 million by the European Commission only last week.
